My amazing weekend

I went to such a wonderful class on the weekend. We were 1000 students in a big room for 11 hours every day (Friday, Saturday and Sunday)The teachers were so amazing that we never felt like falling asleep. I learned so much about how to take care of my money and make a lot of money. I also learned about teaching. I want to take the skills those teachers had and use them in my own classroom. Maybe it will help everybody to stay awake through our long, long classes! (but we never go for 11 hours!)

Shannon Speaks Out

It's so strange today with over half of our class gone to celebrate Eid Al-Fatr. We only have eight people in class today. How strange. It's so quiet! However, we will do some things that are hard to do in a big class and I'm sure everybody today will get more attention and help with their work. To everybody who is celebrating the holiday, I say, "Eid Mubarak!"

Shannon Speaks Out

I had an appointment on Friday after class so I was still downtown at 7 pm. As I walked back to my van, I was surprised at how Downtown Calgary changes as the sun goes down. All the serious people with brief cases and suits are gone. All the street people seem to come out from wherever they have been hiding. The bars open their windows and the music spills out onto the sidewalk.

That night it was quite warm but I was very hungry so I hurried past all the sights and sounds on 7th Avenue. How beautiful it was but how happy I was to leave it all behind and go home!

The unexamined life is not worth living.

This title is an interesting quote but I don't know who said it. It means that to live our best life, we should really think about what we do and what we feel and say. I try to do this all the time and I will write about my thoughts here in this blog. I hope you will do the same in your own blogs.

This morning, a man with a large shoulder bag sped by me on his bicycle. His bag hit my arm and really startled me. Over his shoulder he said, "Sorry!"

I replied, "No problem!" Walking near my was a homeless man and he said, "You should have just pushed him over."

I thought about that for a minute and said, "Well, I couldn't live with myself if I did that and, besides, I have found that what you send out into the world comes back to you." What I meant is that if you are angry and mean to others, you will also have this trouble coming back to you. The homeless man agreed. I think we both are living an examined life!

An Interesting C-Train Ride

Yesterday I took the C-train down 7th Ave to my bus stop. The C-train is always crowded. As soon as I got on a young man said, "Would you like a seat?" I was surprised. He was the kind of young man you see all over Calgary. He wore loose baggy clothes. He had on a baseball cap and had earphones in his ears. What surprised me is that he was so polite. I guess I don't expect that from young people. So it made me think. Am I prejudiced against young people? (Do I judge them before they have a chance to show me who they are?) It is so easy to talk about other people's prejudice against us. But it's harder to discover our own prejudices. Do you know that many people are prejudiced against fat people? They believe that we are fat because we don't know how to control ourselves. It's not always true. They think we must be lazy or sloppy. Also not always true. I think we all need to stop judging each others and just start trying to get to know each other as human beings. What do you think?

Shannon Speaks Out

Wow! My whole class at Bow Valley College has gotten their own blogs! We're writing on the internet! It's so exciting! I'll have to learn how to post their links. I guess I have something to learn too. Good work everybody. Now, tell me what field trips you want to go on.
